Red dot and reflex sights are the most common optic choice for AR-15 and AR-10 builds. They mount to a Picatinny rail, work well inside 200 yards, and let you shoot with both eyes open. The illuminated dot — typically 1–4 MOA — overlays on the target through a glass lens with no magnification. Smaller dots suit precision shooting; larger dots are faster at close range.

Fixed and flip-up iron sights (BUIS) serve as a backup sighting system for any rifle with a Picatinny rail. They co-witness with red dots and reflex sights and give you a functional aiming solution when your primary optic fails or runs out of power.

Rifle scopes add magnification for shooting past 200 yards. Low-power variable optics (LPVOs) at 1–6x cover both close-range and mid-range use on a single optic. Dedicated magnified scopes at 4–16x are better suited to precision and long-range builds.

Red dot magnifiers mount behind an existing red dot sight and boost magnification to 3x or 5x — a straightforward way to extend the range of a red dot setup without replacing the optic.
