Choosing a Rifle Scope for Your AR-15

Scope selection comes down to the distance you're shooting and how you intend to use the rifle. Fixed-power compact scopes in the 4x–6x range are a good fit for CQB and close-range use where a simple, lightweight optic matters more than zoom range. Low-power variable optics (LPVOs) like the Sig Sauer Tango MSR 1–6x cover both close-range and mid-range in one optic by dialing between 1x and 6x. Long-range scopes in the 3–15x range, like the Burris Veracity, are suited for precision work at 200 yards and beyond.


Reticle type is the second main decision. Mil-Dot reticles — found on most UTG and NcSTAR scopes — use hash marks for range estimation and hold-over corrections. Ballistic reticles like the Burris Ballistic CQ and Ballistic Plex are calibrated to match specific bullet drop curves at known distances. MOA reticles use minute-of-angle measurements for windage and elevation adjustments at the turrets.


All scopes in this category mount to standard 1-inch or 30mm Picatinny rings. Confirm the tube diameter (1-inch vs. 30mm) before ordering rings or mounts — most budget scopes use 1-inch tubes while mid-grade and premium scopes typically use 30mm.
