The two numbers in a binocular spec — like 8x42 or 10x50 — tell you magnification and objective lens diameter. An 8x42 magnifies 8x and has a 42mm objective lens. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and amplifies hand shake, so 8x–10x is the practical upper limit for comfortable handheld use. Larger objective lenses gather more light, which improves low-light performance at dawn, dusk, or in overcast conditions.

Digital night vision binoculars, like the Bushnell Equinox Z, use a built-in infrared illuminator and digital sensor to produce a usable image in complete darkness. Unlike traditional image intensifier night vision, digital NV units can record video and photos to a memory card and are significantly more affordable for the capability they provide.

For hunting and range spotting in daylight, mid-magnification models with 40mm–50mm objective lenses cover most use cases. For long-range precision spotting past 200 yards, a variable spotting scope in the 20x–60x range is a better tool than binoculars.
