The FailZero EXO nickel boron coating is applied to every contact surface of the bolt carrier group using a proprietary electroless process that bonds the finish to the metal at the molecular level — producing a surface that is harder than chrome and more slippery than PTFE. The EXO surface is genuinely self-lubricating, reducing friction between the carrier and the upper receiver and between the bolt and barrel extension throughout the cycling cycle without requiring oil or grease to maintain smooth operation. This self-lubricating property is particularly valuable in high-round-count situations or environments where re-lubrication opportunities are limited, as the BCG continues to cycle smoothly even as lubricant burns off or is displaced by fouling. Carbon and fouling shed from the EXO surface more readily than from a standard phosphate finish, making cleaning significantly faster and allowing the BCG to maintain function with less maintenance between range sessions or field use. The BCG is built to mil-spec dimensions and is compatible with standard AR-15 and M16 pattern upper receivers. For AR-15 shooters who want the long-term maintenance, friction, and corrosion benefits of nickel boron coating over a standard phosphate BCG, the FailZero EXO bolt carrier group is a proven option across defensive, competition, and general-purpose builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 7.62×39 require a special BCG in an AR-15?

Yes. The 7.62×39 cartridge uses a larger bolt face diameter than 5.56 NATO and requires a dedicated 7.62×39-specific bolt. Standard AR-15 BCGs cannot be used with 7.62×39 barrels. A 7.62×39 barrel, bolt, and compatible magazine are all required to build a reliable 7.62×39 AR-15.

What is the FailZero EXO coating?

EXO is FailZero’s proprietary nickel boron coating bonded to every contact surface of the BCG at the molecular level via an electroless process. It is harder than chrome, self-lubricating, and sheds carbon more readily than phosphate — reducing maintenance demands and extending the interval between required cleaning and lubrication cycles.

What upper receivers is this BCG compatible with?

This BCG is compatible with standard AR-15 pattern upper receivers configured for 7.62×39 with a caliber-specific barrel. The carrier dimensions are standard mil-spec AR-15; only the bolt is 7.62×39-specific. A dedicated 7.62×39 barrel is required for proper headspace and feeding.
