A complete bolt carrier group (BCG) includes the bolt carrier, bolt, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, cam pin, and extractor with extractor spring and insert. Nickel boron (NiB) is an electroless coating applied to the BCG surfaces that provides a very hard, slick surface with a silver appearance. The reduced friction coefficient of nickel boron compared to phosphate finish reduces the force required for the carrier to cycle through the action, and the slick surface makes the BCG significantly easier to wipe clean during maintenance — carbon and fouling do not adhere as tenaciously to NiB as they do to phosphate. The M16 carrier profile is fully compatible with AR-15 lower receivers in semi-automatic fire and provides additional mass and a more complete gas seal at the carrier key compared to a cut-down AR-15 profile carrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of nickel boron coating?

Nickel boron (NiB) provides a very hard, slick surface that reduces friction during cycling, makes the BCG significantly easier to clean (carbon doesn’t adhere as strongly to NiB as to phosphate), and provides good corrosion resistance. The silver appearance also makes it easy to see carbon buildup during cleaning.

Is the M16 carrier compatible with an AR-15 lower?

Yes — the M16 carrier profile is fully compatible with standard AR-15 lower receivers in semi-automatic fire and is the standard carrier used by most quality BCG manufacturers for its additional mass and improved gas seal.

Does NiB require different lubrication than phosphate?

NiB coated BCGs can function with less lubrication than phosphate due to the lower friction coefficient of the coating, but standard AR-15 lubricants work well. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for lubrication intervals.
