The buffer tube — also called the receiver extension — houses the buffer and buffer spring and provides the attachment point for the stock or pistol brace. Mil-spec diameter buffer tubes have a smaller outer diameter than commercial-spec tubes and are required for most quality mil-spec stocks, pistol braces, and stock kits currently on the market. Rifle-length buffer tubes are non-collapsible and used with fixed rifle-length stocks where a longer overall length is required or preferred. Carbine-length buffer tubes have six adjustment positions and accept collapsible stocks for adjustable length of pull on carbine and pistol configurations.
