The charging handle rides in a machined channel in the upper receiver and is used to manually cycle the bolt carrier group rearward to chamber the first round, clear a malfunction, or lock the bolt to the rear for inspection. An ambidextrous charging handle provides latches on both sides of the handle body, allowing the shooter to charge the rifle with either hand without repositioning the firing hand or breaking a firing grip. This is particularly valuable for left-handed shooters and for right-handed shooters who need to charge with the non-dominant hand during malfunction clearance or when the firing hand is otherwise occupied. The extended latch surface on each side provides a larger grip area for positive actuation even while wearing gloves or under stress.
