These are the small silver detents that seat inside the AR-15 lower receiver and retain the pivot and takedown pins during use. Each detent works with its corresponding spring to keep the pin locked in position and prevent it from walking out of the lower receiver.

What Are AR-15 Pivot & Takedown Pin Detents?

The pivot pin detent and takedown pin detent are two of the smallest but most critical parts in an AR-15 lower. Without them, the pivot and takedown pins have nothing to hold them in the lower receiver — the upper and lower wouldn’t stay connected. Each detent is a small cylindrical piece that seats in a hole in the lower receiver wall and presses against a groove in the pin, keeping it captured. A detent spring behind each detent provides the tension.
