This 16″ 5.56 NATO unassembled AR rifle upper build kit runs a 15″ KeyMod free-float handguard and a carbine-length gas system on a 4150 CMV phosphate barrel with 1:7 RH twist. The 15″ handguard fills the length of the barrel almost entirely, keeping the profile clean and providing the maximum number of KeyMod accessory positions across its length. Upper receiver and handguard are both finished in Zombie Green Cerakote.

The forged 7075-T6 upper receiver includes M4 feed ramps. The 6061-T6 aluminum handguard accepts standard KeyMod accessories at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions — add only what the build needs without locking into a full-rail setup. BCG and charging handle are not included.

What is 4150 CMV steel and why does it matter for a barrel?

4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium is a high-strength steel alloy used for mil-spec barrels. The chromium content improves corrosion resistance and hardness, the molybdenum adds toughness under heat and stress, and the vanadium refines the grain structure for better strength-to-weight performance. Compared to 4140 steel, 4150 CMV handles the heat and pressure of sustained fire better, which extends barrel life under hard use. It’s the same spec used in military M4 barrels and is the standard for quality AR-15 builds.

Why is manganese phosphate used as a barrel finish?

Manganese phosphate — commonly called Parkerizing — is a porous surface treatment that provides corrosion resistance and excellent oil retention. The porous surface holds lubricant longer than a smooth finish, which keeps the bore protected between cleaning sessions and helps the barrel run cleaner under sustained fire. It’s a proven military-spec finish that has been used on service rifle barrels for decades. It’s not as visually refined as a nitride or chrome finish, but it performs reliably in field conditions.

Does the Zombie Green Cerakote affect the fit or function of the upper?

No. Cerakote is applied in a very thin layer — typically .001″ or less — which has no meaningful effect on the tolerances of the upper receiver or handguard. It does not require any modification to fit a standard lower or accept standard components. The finish bonds directly to the metal surface and cures hard, so it won’t flake or peel under normal use.

Can this upper be used for competition shooting?

Yes. A 16″ barrel with a 15″ free-float handguard is a common configuration for practical rifle competition — the free-float handguard eliminates variables from grip and sling pressure, and the 1:7 twist handles heavier match bullets like 75gr and 77gr OTM loads well. The upper will need a BCG and charging handle to be functional, and the lower you pair it with will determine trigger options and ergonomics. Many competitors start with a build like this and tune from there.
