Does a free-float handguard actually improve accuracy on an AR-15?
Yes, in a meaningful way. A standard drop-in handguard contacts the barrel at the delta ring and at the front sight block, which means pressure applied to the handguard transfers directly to the barrel and can shift your point of impact. A free-float handguard attaches only at the upper receiver and never touches the barrel, so grip pressure, sling tension, and bipod load don’t move your zero. For a 16″ rifle used at practical distances, the difference is most noticeable when shooting from a supported position or with a sling under tension.
What M-LOK accessories work well on a 15″ handguard?
The 15″ length gives you enough rail space to comfortably run a light at the 9 or 3 o’clock position, a foregrip or hand stop toward the front, and still have room for a sling attachment point. Can I use .223 Remington ammunition in this 5.56 NATO barrel?
Yes. A 5.56 NATO chamber is dimensionally larger than a .223 Remington chamber and safely accepts both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammunition. The reverse is not true — you should not fire 5.56 NATO in a .223-only chamber due to higher pressure. This barrel is also compatible with .223 Wylde chambering loads. For most training and defensive use, standard mil-spec 5.56 and commercial .223 loads both run reliably in this chamber.
How do I time the gas block during assembly?
Gas block timing refers to aligning the gas port in the barrel with the gas port in the gas block. The gas block slides over the .750″ journal on the barrel and needs to be positioned so its port lines up precisely with the barrel port. Use a drill bit or alignment pin to confirm the ports are aligned before tightening the set screws. Misalignment will cause cycling failures. Once aligned, apply thread locker to the set screws and torque to spec. Some builders dimple or pin the gas block for added retention, though set-screws are sufficient for standard use.
