What buffer weight should I use with a 16″ carbine-length gas setup?
A standard carbine buffer (3 oz) is the baseline for a 16″ carbine-length gas upper and works reliably with most BCGs and standard-pressure 5.56 ammunition. If you’re experiencing over-gassing symptoms — bolt bouncing, brass being thrown far, or case head separation — stepping up to a heavy carbine buffer (HSS, around 3.8 oz) or an H2 buffer (4.6 oz) can slow the bolt carrier and smooth out the cycle. For most standard builds running factory ammo without a suppressor, a standard carbine buffer runs fine without any tuning.
Does the 15″ M-LOK handguard require any modification to the barrel nut area?
No modification to the barrel or upper receiver is needed. The free-float handguard replaces the standard delta ring assembly with a proprietary barrel nut. The barrel stays exactly as installed — the handguard slips over the barrel and threads its barrel nut onto the upper receiver threads, then locks down with the appropriate wrench. No drilling, pinning, or modification to the receiver is required.
What optic mounting options does this upper support?
The upper receiver has a standard Picatinny top rail machined into the forging, which accepts any standard AR-15 optic mount — scope rings, cantilever mounts, red dot mounts, BUIS, and LPVO mounts all drop straight on. The 15″ handguard also has a continuous top rail that runs flush with the receiver rail, giving you an unbroken sight plane the full length of the handguard if needed for a longer rail-mounted accessory or extended sight radius.
Can this upper be used in a pistol configuration?
No. A 16″ barrel is a rifle barrel by federal definition. Attaching this upper to a lower with a pistol brace does not make it a legal pistol — a 16″ barrel paired with a pistol lower is still classified as a rifle and must meet rifle OAL requirements. This upper is designed for standard rifle builds paired with a rifle or carbine lower and a legal stock configuration.
