What is the advantage of a phosphate barrel finish versus a nitride finish?
Manganese phosphate (Parkerizing) and nitride (QPQ/salt bath) are the two most common AR-15 barrel finishes. Phosphate is a proven military-spec finish with excellent oil retention due to its porous surface — it holds lubricant well and is easy to maintain. Nitride penetrates deeper into the steel, providing better corrosion resistance, a slightly harder surface, and easier cleaning since the bore surface is smoother. Nitride also doesn’t require as much lubrication to function. Both finishes are durable and reliable under regular use — phosphate is the traditional mil-spec choice, while nitride has become popular for its maintenance advantages.
Is a 16″ AR-15 considered a rifle or a carbine?
Technically both terms apply. Under federal law, any AR-15 with a 16″ or longer barrel and an overall length over 26″ is classified as a rifle — no NFA paperwork required. The term “carbine” is commonly used to describe shorter, lighter AR variants originally derived from the M4 carbine configuration, and many 16″ builds are called carbines in practice. For legal classification purposes, 16″ is the minimum barrel length to build a rifle without additional NFA registration.
What FDE accessories pair well with FDE Cerakote?
FDE shades vary by manufacturer, so an exact color match isn’t guaranteed across brands. Magpul’s FDE, Geissele’s DDC (Daniel Defense Coyote), and Cerakote FDE are all slightly different tones. The FDE Cerakote on this kit falls in the standard flat earth spectrum — it pairs well with Magpul FDE furniture and most FDE-spec accessories without looking obviously mismatched. If you’re building a strictly color-matched rifle, verify shades beforehand. Most builders run “close enough” FDE and the combination looks cohesive.
Do I need a specific barrel nut wrench for the 15″ KeyMod handguard?
Yes. The 15″ KeyMod free-float handguard uses a proprietary barrel nut that requires a matching wrench — typically a castle nut or spanner wrench specific to that handguard’s design. The barrel nut is included with the handguard, and the wrench spec is listed with the handguard documentation. Using the wrong wrench risks damaging the barrel nut. Once you have the correct wrench, torque to the manufacturer’s spec and time to the nearest gas tube alignment hole before locking down.
