- FAQ Unassembled Upper Kit
The DT12-186 is a 10.5″ 5.56 NATO unassembled AR pistol upper kit finished in OD Green Cerakote across the upper receiver and handguard. The 10.5″ barrel runs on a carbine-length gas system — the right call at this barrel length for reliable cycling without over-gassing the action. Paired with a 10″ M-LOK free-float handguard, this setup gives you a clean, lightweight pistol platform with plenty of room for accessories.
The barrel is 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium with a manganese phosphate finish, M4 profile, 1:7 RH twist, 1/2×28 muzzle thread, and a .750″ gas block journal. The upper receiver is forged 7075-T6 aluminum with M4 feed ramps — finished in OD Green Cerakote to match the handguard. The 10″ M-LOK handguard is 6061-T6 aluminum with an OD Green Cerakote finish, accepting standard M-LOK accessories along its full length.

What muzzle devices are compatible with the 1/2×28 thread on this barrel?
The 1/2×28 thread pitch is the standard for 5.56/.223 barrels and is compatible with the widest range of muzzle devices on the market — A2 flash hiders, compensators, linear comps, muzzle brakes, and suppressor mounts/adapters. If you’re running a pistol build, a linear compensator is a popular choice since it redirects blast and concussion forward rather than to the sides, which matters more in a compact configuration than it does on a rifle-length build.
Does a free-float handguard affect accuracy on a pistol build?
Free-float handguards improve shot-to-shot consistency by eliminating contact between the handguard and the barrel. On a pistol build optimized for close-range use, the practical benefit is less about extreme precision and more about a stable, consistent grip platform. Slings, pressure pads, and foregrips all attach without putting stress on the barrel, which keeps point of impact consistent regardless of how the handguard is loaded.
Do I need a pistol-specific buffer and spring for this build?
For a standard pistol build using a pistol brace and pistol buffer tube, you’ll need a pistol-length buffer tube and an appropriate buffer weight. A standard carbine buffer and spring are commonly used, but some builders tune buffer weight to optimize reliability with their specific BCG and ammunition combination. The upper itself doesn’t dictate buffer weight — that comes down to your gas system, BCG mass, and ammo.
What does OD Green Cerakote look like compared to other greens in the lineup?
OD Green — Olive Drab — is a muted, earthy military-spectrum green. It’s a subdued tone that reads as a natural, field-appropriate color rather than a bright or vivid green. Compared to Zombie Green, which is a high-visibility electric green, OD Green is significantly darker and more neutral. It pairs well with black or FDE accessories if you’re mixing components on the build.
