Rear Sight Basics — Windage, Apertures, and Co-Witness

The rear sight controls windage zero on an AR-15 or AR-10. Left/right adjustment moves the point of impact in the same direction as the windage knob. Most AR-15 and AR-10 rear sights use a dual-aperture design — a small aperture for precision shooting at distance and a large aperture for close-range and low-light use.

Flip-up rear sights fold flat when not needed and deploy with a spring-loaded lever to co-witness with a red dot or reflex sight. The Magpul MBUS Gen 2 is polymer with a metal aperture and comes in black, FDE, OD Green, and grey. The MBUS Pro is all-metal with a lower, more precise sight picture.

Detachable carry handle rear sights mount to a flat-top upper's Picatinny rail and replicate the A2 fixed carry handle setup. This is a practical option for AR-15 and AR-10 flat-top builds that need a traditional iron sight configuration without a permanently attached carry handle.
