A flash hider is the most common muzzle device on the AR-15 platform. The standard mil-spec A2 birdcage ships on most factory AR-15s, and for good reason — it is reliable, effective, and proven over decades of military use. Its job is to reduce or eliminate the visible muzzle flash when the rifle fires, which matters in low-light conditions where a bright flash can momentarily affect your night vision.

How Flash Hiders Work

When a round exits the barrel, burning propellant gas follows. That gas ignites on contact with oxygen, creating the visible muzzle flash. Flash hiders vent and disperse that gas through tines, ports, or slots before it can fully combust in one concentrated burst. The A2 birdcage design — closed at the bottom, open slots at the top and sides — is the most proven pattern, venting gas upward and to the sides while also helping to minimize muzzle rise.
