Choosing an AR-15 Builder Set
A builder set settles three decisions at once — receivers, rail length, and finish — and keeps them matched so your build looks like one piece instead of mismatched parts. Here's what to weigh.
What's in the set
Each set includes three matched pieces: an AR-15 upper receiver, an AR-15 lower receiver, and a free-float handguard (rail). It does not include a barrel, bolt carrier group, charging handle, lower parts kit, trigger, or stock — those are the components you add to finish the build. Rail length
Handguards come in 7″, 10″, 12″, and 15″. Shorter rails (7–10″) suit pistol-length and lightweight builds; 12–15″ rails give more room for hand placement, optics, and accessories on a carbine or rifle. Match the rail length to your barrel and intended build.
M-LOK vs. Keymod
Most sets use an M-LOK handguard — the Magpul-developed standard that the majority of current AR-15 accessories are made for. A Keymod option is also available. If you're buying new rails, lights, and grips today, M-LOK is the safer bet for accessory availability; choose Keymod only if you already own Keymod accessories.
Finish and color options
Sets are offered in black plus color finishes — Burnt Bronze, Flat Dark Earth (FDE), OD Green, Tungsten Grey, Titanium Blue, Pink, Purple, and Zombie Green. Because the upper, lower, and rail are finished together, the color stays consistent across all three pieces. Check the individual product page for the exact finish on each set.

What's included in an AR-15 builder set?

What else do I need to finish the build?
To complete a rifle from a builder set you'll add a barrel, gas system (gas block and tube), bolt carrier group, charging handle, lower parts kit (trigger, hammer, safety, pins, grip), and a buffer tube with stock or brace. Many of these are available on the site to match your set.
What's the difference between M-LOK and Keymod?
Both are slots for mounting accessories to the handguard. M-LOK is the newer, Magpul-developed standard and is what most current AR-15 accessories are made for; Keymod is the older system. Accessories are not cross-compatible, so pick the system your rail-mounted gear uses — M-LOK if you're starting fresh.
Are the upper and lower a matched fit?
Yes. The upper and lower are built to standard AR-15 (mil-spec) dimensions and finished together, so they fit properly and the color matches across the set. They also work with standard AR-15 components when you build it out.
Do you need an FFL to buy an AR-15 builder set?
The lower receiver is the serialized, regulated part of an AR-15, so a complete (stripped or assembled) lower receiver must ship to a licensed dealer (FFL) for transfer, like any AR-15 lower.
